The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating an incident in which “an unruly guest” at a Muldersdrift lodge was wounded in the head by police.
IPID's Grace Langa said the incident happened at Misty Hill Lodge on Saturday when the guest began arguing with staff.
A video of the incident is being widely circulated.
In a statement on Monday, Langa said police were called to the scene when the man, Len Cloete, refused to leave, and after an exchange with police members, he is heard cocking a firearm.
Langa said the man had two firearms and at one point disarmed a police member while daring the female police officer to shoot him.
At that point, an officer is seen in the video pointing a firearm at the man and discharging the weapon, wounding him in the head.
Cloete is under police guard in hospital.
