Innocent bystanders who witnessed two dramatic jewellery store robberies in Phoenix, Durban, on Monday are now also wanted by police.

Brigadier Jay Naicker says a gang of heavily armed men robbed two stores in a Phoenix mall and fired several shots as they made their getaway.

He says police responded and a shootout ensued on the Phoenix highway.

Brigadier Naicker says the gang was armed with high calibre weapons and caused extensive damage to a police vehicle before fleeing on foot.

He says it was during this time that bystanders, who witnessed the robberies, decided to threaten the already traumatised staff by stealing goods that were left behind.

He said these suspects will also be hunted down by police and will face the full might of the law.
