Investigation launched into UNISA campus fire

An investigation has been launched after a portion of the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela building at the Muckleneuk Campus caught fire on Wednesday morning.

An investigation has been launched after a portion of the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela building at the Muckleneuk Campus caught fire on Wednesday morning.

According to the spokesperson of the university, Thomas Huma, teams from Unisa's Protection Services and Facilities Management, joined by the and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Puleng LenkaBula  were on the scene.

Huma says the City of Tshwane Fire Department and the South African Police Services were notified.

He says at the time of the incident, no injuries were reported.

“The cause of the fire and extent of the damage will form part of the investigations. The investigation report will guide management on the next steps,” Huma said.

The building has been closed for health and safety reasons.

Meanwhile, LenkaBula, took to twitter to thank the Tshwane Fire Department for their swift action.

She said: "On behalf of all Unisans Our Gratitude City Tshwane Fire Brigade Department for swiftly containing the fire. It Could've been worse! Investigations are ongoing."
