The Hawks have arrested seven suspects, including a convicted criminal who is serving a sentence at the Kgoshi Mampuru Correctional Services in Pretoria.
The arrests came after an inmate called the Phalaborwa police station in Limpopo and pretended to be a Lieutenant Colonel from the elite unit.
Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says the impostor informed police about a particular suspect who was due to appear in court.
He said the inmate instructed police to get in touch with the man's family to deposit his bail money into a bank account.
Mulaudzi says two men and two women, arrested in Brits and Witbank, face charges of corruption and impersonating police officers.
