Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor Benson Fihla has made a call to residents for sincere introspection to determine the role, or lack thereof, towards building the vision of a South Africa that belongs to all.
He was speadking during Freedom Day celebrations in Kwanoxolo.
With reference to the aim of the Freedom Day Walk against Violent Crime and Abuse of Women and Children that formed part of the programme, Fihla said that where there is violence, there can be no development, peace or progress.
He committed himself and his team of Councillors to an active community engagement programme.
He gave the reassurance that senior management positions in the Municipality, which had long been vacant, would be filled by the end of June.
At her Freedom Day address at the Sabalele Sports Fields in Cofimvaba, Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet also focused on the social ill of violence against women and children.
She said men had an important role to play in advancing affirmative social values.
Kiviet said men needed to mend the social fabric that is clearly been torn apart by the behavior of those who, in reality, are behaving like animals.
