The Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union, Imatu, says its pleased with the significant improvement in the quality of water supplied by municipalities.
The union was commenting on the release of the Blue Drop report on Monday by Water Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa.
According to the 2012 report, the number of municipalities awarded Blue Drop status has increased by almost 50% from 66 in 2011 to 98 this year.
Imatu says it is encouraged by the marked improvement in South Africa's water quality.
Spokesperson, Johan Koen, says Imatu believes that this excellence in drinking water quality management must be implemented and realised by all municipalities.
Two Eastern Cape municipalities, Koukamma and Ikwezi were part of 14 municipalities red-flagged by Water Affairs which said residents should boil or treat their water before drinking.
