Illegal goods seized at South Africa's border posts

The SA Revenue Service says illicit cigarettes and ivory have been found at border posts with South Africa's neighbours over the past week.

Contraband cigarettes valued at over R770,000 were seized at the Beit Bridge border post with Zimbabwe.

5.2kg of ivory valued at over R16,000 was found concealed in the engine compartment of a bus crossing into South
Africa from Zimbabwe.

At the Skilpadshek border post with Botswana, contraband cigarettes with a value of over R360,000 were seized on Christmas Day.

Earlier today, also at the Beit Bridge border post, a woman was arrested after being found in possession of 54 packs of mining explosives, 150 detonators, and nine
detonator cords valued at over R320,000.

She told officials she sold the explosives to illegal miners in Gauteng.
