Identification of SA victims continues in Nigeria

The government says a five-step process is underway to identify the bodies of the South Africans killed in the Nigeria church building collapse.

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said government needs to ensure that all 84 South Africans killed in the disaster are correctly identified and their remains brought home.

Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Radebe said the identification of the bodies is methodical and time consuming process, and one could not be predict the exact time frames for completion.

Radebe, who heads an inter-ministerial team tasked by President Jacob Zuma to manage the situation, said a team of South African experts is working closely with their Nigerian counterparts to ensure that this process is completed as soon as possible."

"We want to assure the South African nation that we shall spare neither strength nor effort in ensuring that the deceased are repatriated back home. "We believe that the repatriation of the deceased is the crucial first step in helping the families find closure in the aftermath of this terrible tragedy," he said.

Around 115 people were killed and dozens trapped when a multi-storey guesthouse attached to the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed in Lagos on 12 September.
