The Council for the Advancement of the Constitution, CASAC, says it is seeking details of a nuclear deal signed between South Africa and Russia.
CASAC executive secretary, Lawson Naidoo, says they're concerned whether proper and appropriate procurement and other approval processes had been followed.
He says they want Energy Minister Tina Joemat Petterssen, to provide them with a copy of the Inter-Governmental Agreement.
South Africa confirmed that an agreement for the joint construction of nuclear power plants in South Africa had been signed with the Russian State Corporation, ‘Rosatom’.
The agreement, estimated to be around 50-billion US dollars is for the construction of several nuclear power plants, including one at Thyspunt in the Eastern Cape.
However, on Tuesday evening, the South African government said it had not yet awarded Russia the deal, saying the countries had merely signed a cooperation agreement.
Pretoria's energy ministry insisted that the Russia deal "initiates" the "procurement" phase of the project and that other countries would be given a chance to bid.
