The police watchdog, the Independent Complaints Directorate, will be strengthened and renamed.
The police ministry says from April 1, the unit will be known as the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
Ministry spokesperson, Zweli Mnisi, says they are sending out a clear message that the new body will focus on, not just processing complaints, but also developing strong investigative capacity.
He says the unit will have more legislative powers to investigate corruption and human rights abuses within the police.
