The Southern African Agri Initiative (SAAI) filed an urgent application in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday to lift the ban on interprovincial travel for subsistence hunting purposes.
The organisation that protects the rights and interests of family farmers – including game farmers, applied on behalf of 368 game farm owners and operators.
Saai CEO Francois Rossouw said South African game farmers have suffered a loss of R2 Billion in income due to COVID-19.
He said approximately 88% of hunters hunt outside their province and thus the prohibition on interprovincial travel is a huge blow to the industry which contributes close to R12 billion a year to the country's economy.
The organisation has slammed the latest regulations and said they violate the constitutional rights of game farmers.
SAAI said these regulations were extremely vague and were made irrationally.
