The hunting industry says the decision by the airline, FlySafair to allow hunters to fly with their firearms to the Eastern Cape, would be a massive boost for the local economy.
The airline management confirmed last week that it would accommodate passengers and their hunting rifles on domestic flights to the Province.
The operator says the handling and transporting of firearms would only include shotguns, rifles and ammunition. No handguns or modern sporting rifles would be permitted.
This feature is only available for departures after 1 February 2021.
It will be available for any adult who has booked a standard or premium fare.
The price will be R1 150 per person per segment.
The service is limited to five per flight.
Wildlife Ranching South Africa (WRSA) said it was a concern that hunters were previously not allowed to fly with their firearms.
WRSA Chief Executive Officer, Richard York said the decision would also benefit the hunting and wildlife industry in the long term.
This project is the result of a collaborative effort between Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), WRSA, the Professional Hunters’ Association of South Africa (PHASA), the Confederation of Hunting Associations of South Africa (CHASA), Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), NMB Airlift Committee, and FlySafair.
