Horror bus crash: more stringent measures needed, urges union

The Public Servants Association has called on authorities to increase their efforts in regulating and monitoring road safety, particularly on high-risk routes such as the deadly R21 in Kempton Park, Johannesburg.

More than a dozen people died in a bus accident along the highway on Tuesday while many others, including the driver, were rushed to nearby hospitals.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), which was also on the scene, said the bus driver was among those who were seriously injured.

The RTMC also later on Tuesday confirmed that the death toll stood at 13, and not the 16 that was previously reported.

PSA spokesperson Olivia Mashego said the union extended its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the people who passed away.

"This devastating incident, which claimed multiple lives and left others injured, again highlighted the urgent need for greater safety measures on South Africa's roads," she said in a statement.

"The PSA urges authorities to provide the necessary support and assistance to those affected.

"The Union reiterates its commitment to advocating for the well-being and safety of all South African citizens, especially those who rely on public transport."

The PSA said South Africa needed more stringent measures to ensure that vehicles on the roads, particularly buses, meet the highest safety standards.

"The PSA further calls on those involved in transporting members of the public to take extra precaution and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to protect lives," Mashego added.
