Horner murder accused loses bail appeal bid

File

Free State High Court Judge, Celeste Reinders, has dismissed a bid by one of the suspects in the Brendin Horner murder trial to appeal the Senekal Magistrate Court's refusal to grant him bail.

Reinders said on Friday that she was not convinced that Magistrate Deon Van Rooyen had erred or misdirected himself when he dismissed the bail application of Sekwetje Mahlambi in October.

She said Mahlambi, who stands accused of murder and robbery, failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the state does not have a prima facie case against him.

Meanwhile, Mahlambi and his co-accused Sekola Matlaletsa, who was granted bail of R5000, will appear again in the Senekal Magistrate's Court, near Paul Roux in the Free State, on 22 January.

Horner's murder sparked outrage in the Free State community leading to tensions between farmers and the EFF during the bail hearings.
