Hilton Botha quits the SAPS

Hilton Botha, the former lead detective in the murder case involving paralympian Oscar Pistorius, has resigned from the SA Police Service.

Brigadier Neville Malila says he gave notice with immediate effect on Wednesday.

Malila said Botha had been an investigator for many years and a member of the police for more than 22 years.

He added that the police were losing a lot of experience but that it was Botha's personal decision to leave the SAPS.

Botha was removed from the Pistorius case last month following reports that he had been charged with attempted murder for an incident in 2011 in which he allegedly fired shots at a minibus while trying to stop the vehicle.

Botha is moving into the construction sector and starts his new job next week.

He said he harboured no ill feelings towards the police.
