The KZN Health Department is probing allegations that a 23-year-old woman, who hadn't completed high school, has been posing as a medical intern at various local hospitals.
She was arrested on fraud charges recently.
She's allegedly worked at five facilities over three years.
According to a Sunday Times report, the 23-year-old Nokwanda Ndlovu, a high school dropout, claimed to be a university student who needed to complete her internship.
She professed to have studied for her medical degree at Wits University.
She allegedly moved from one facility to another and she performed medical procedures without formal training.
Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu's confirmed that a criminal investigation's underway.
Ndlovu, who's out on bail, is due back in the Nkandla Magistrate's Court next week.
Meanwhile, the IFP has described the incident as shocking. The party says this does not only leave a bitter taste but is also a reflection of the shambolic state of affairs in the embattled Health Department.
The IFP added that the management of the hospitals concerned should be held accountable.
