Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has warned that while the number of new COVID-19 cases is stabilising in the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal numbers are expected to join Gauteng, which is currently the country’s epicentre.
Dr Mkhize was speaking during his visit to the Nasrec Field Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday to assess Gauteng's readiness for the COVID-19 surge.
He said his department is in discussions with KZN authorities on how to move ahead, as infections are expected to peak in the next few weeks.
He said the goal now is to avert a shortage of beds and oxygen.
Mkhize adds that he would also be visiting the Eastern Cape later this week.
The National death toll as at midnight was 5 173.
