Hewitt gets bail and may not leave his house in EC

Former tennis champion Bob Hewitt has been granted bail of R10 000 after being found guilty on two counts of rape and one of sexual assault by the Johannesburg High Court, sitting in Palm Ridge.

Seventy-five-year-old, Hewitt, who lives at Addo in the Eastern Cape, was convicted on Monday morning of raping Theresa Tolken and Sue-ellen Sheehan, who were tennis pupils of his some 30 year ago.

He was also convicted of sexually assaulting a third woman whose identity was not revealed.

In handing down judgement,  judge Bert Bam said the State's evidence against Hewitt had been overwhelming.

He said time had not erased the crimes and that a guilty person should not go unpunished.

Hewitt was ordered not to leave his home at Addo pending sentencing  proceedings.

The case has been postponed to the 17th of April for sentencing proceedings in the Pretoria High Court.
