Health Minister concerned about latest Covid numbers

Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, has raised his concerns about the climbing figures of positive COVID-19 cases in South Africa.

He says over the past week there has been an increase of 9.1% in new cases.

Meanwhile, 102 more people succumbed to the respiratory disease pushing the death toll to 18 843.

The Minister has once again urged citizens to continue to wear masks in public, wash hands frequently, and practice social distancing.

According to the World Health Organisation, there are 41 104 946 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1 128 325 deaths reported, globally.

Meanwhile, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber says Covid-19 positive cases in the Metro have doubled in the past seven to ten days.

Chamber President, Dr Andrew Muir, says they’re seeing a marked increase in the number of patients occupying hospital beds, particularly in private hospitals.

Muir, who represents the Business Chamber on the Metro’s Covid-19 Command Council, says he’s deeply concerned that the numbers are trending in the wrong direction.

He said in a statement on Thursday afternoon that the Business Chamber had in recent weeks noted some complacency in terms of the levels of compliance by some businesses to the required regulations.
