A gymnastics coach from Johannesburg is out on bail following his arrest on charges relating to sexual abuse.
The coach, who cannot be named due to his alleged victims being minors, appeared in court earlier this week.
The Organisation Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) said the accused was arrested at his home last week after they accompanied the alleged victim to lay a charge at the Sophiatown police station.
A spokesperson for WMACA, Olivia Jasriel says they confronted the South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) with allegations brought to them by several victims.
She says they initially denied any knowledge of misconduct within their fraternity.
On Tuesday Gymnastics SA released a statement confirming that one of their former coaches was arrested adding that they viewed the allegations in a serious light.
According to Jasriel, there was an internal investigation conducted related to allegations of sexual assault against minors.
She said the federation had a duty to report the matter to the police and not handle it internally.
Gymnastics SA said that if the coach was found guilty in the courts they would ensure that he is suspended and barred from registering with the federation again.
The bail amount of the suspect and remand date was not communicated to the media.
