Government says it has decided to appeal the recent high court judgement relating to the controversial departure of Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir from South Africa.
In a statement issued on Monday, government spokesperson Phumla Williams says the reasons for the appeal will be contained in the affidavit that will be submitted within the prescribed due date.
Last week, the Pretoria High Court requested the National Director of Public Prosecutions to consider initiating criminal charges over Bashir’s departure from South Africa in defiance of a High court order expressly prohibiting it.
Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide for his government's offensive in south Sudan.
Two warrants of arrest were issued against him in 2009 and 2010
