The environmental affairs department says pigeon racing has NOT been banned.
On Wednesday, the NSPCA told AlgoaFM News that as far as it was concerned, the inclusion of feral pigeons on the invasive species list rendered the breeding, trading and racing of pigeons illegal.
The Department of environmental affairs says, however, that its met with specialists and reached an agreement that pigeon racing will not have a significant impact on the feral pigeon invasion.
It says the numbers are reasonably low in relation to the existing invasions, that it is possible to provide exemption for pigeon racing, which is a multi-million rand industry in South Africa.
