The National Consumer Commission will probe the incorrect labelling of meat products,
Acting government spokesperson, Phumla Williams, made the announcement on Thursday following cabinet's fortnightly meeting.
She says this matter may have far reaching and wide-ranging implications and impact on the broader consumer public.
The government intervention follows revelations that traces of goat, donkey and water buffalo had been found in several meat products tested by the University of Stellenbosch.
The researchers say the product labelling made no mention of these ingredients.
Acting National Consumer Commissioner Ibraham Mohamed says the scope of investigation into the meat scandal is set to be completed on Thursday.
