Prospective university and college students in South Africa will have to apply to study through a central admissions centre.
According to Sapa, South Africa's deputy minister of higher education, Hlengiwe Mkhize, said that long queues and chaotic registration at institutions meant admissions would be centralised.
In January, a mother died when she was trampled by pushing crowds while waiting with her son to register at the University of Johannesburg.
Her death highlighted the inability of universities and colleges to cope with the big number of applications for admission.
