Gauteng police fatally wound ATM bombing suspect

File

Gauteng police foiled an ATM bombing, fatally wounding one suspect and arresting two others following an early morning shoot-out in Lenasia on Thursday.

Major-General Nonkululeko Phokane said two other suspects were wounded and hospitalised, while five others remain on the run.

Police said members of the multi-disciplinary team were following up on a tip-off about a group of men about ten men who were planning to bomb an ATM.

Phokane said the group included the most “wanted and dangerous” criminals in the province who were allegedly planning several ATM bombings and other serious crimes in Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.

The deputy national commissioner for crime detection, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya commended the officers involved in the operation.

"Collaboration between law enforcement and relevant stakeholders such as private security plays a significant role in preventing and combating serious and violent crime in the country," General Sibiya added.
