Gauteng police have arrested a 23-year-old man on a charge of perjury for falsely claiming that he had been hijacked and his five-year-old son kidnapped.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili, said the man reported the alleged hijacking on Saturday.
She said police mobilised resources to search for the suspects and the child.
Muridili said upon further questioning it was established that the man had lied to the police.
“The alleged hijacked vehicle was parked at his home and the child was also safe. He was arrested and charged with perjury,” she said.
The false kidnapping report comes after the four Moti brothers were reunited with their family several weeks after their dramatic kidnapping while on their way to school on 20 October.
Last week a young girl was kidnapped outside a Johannesburg school.
Gauteng provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, condemned the man’s actions as irresponsible and reckless.
He warned the public against reporting false cases “as they could face criminal charges.”
