Gauteng learners drown in Durban during rugby tour

Police divers recovered the bodies of two teenagers at Laguna Beach and Country Club beach respectively.

Hoërskool Birchleigh in Gauteng has been hit by double tragedy following the death of two pupils at the weekend.

The grade 10 and grade 12 boys drowned at a beach in Durban during a rugby tour on Sunday.

The pupils left Kempton Park for the tour last week Thursday to participate in a sports tournament.

The group made its way to Durban North beach on Sunday where some pupils were reportedly assisted to shore by lifeguards after experiencing challenges in the water.

It's understood officials realised the two boys were unaccounted for during a headcount.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says the rest of the pupils were accompanied back to the accommodation while the teachers proceeded to search the vicinity looking for the two missing boys.

"The search went on until the evening with no success, after which the educators opened a missing person case at Durban Central Police Station," says Mabona.

The search was abandoned on Monday when the two bodies washed up about 2 kilometres north of the beach where they were last seen alive.

"Police are currently investigating circumstances surrounding the incident.”

While their identities have been withheld, the deceased pupils are from Birchleigh and Tembisa.
