A Grade 7 learner from Echibini Junior Secondary School in Soshanguve in Gauteng was raped and strangled to death in her home on Sunday.
MEC for the Department of Education MEC Matome Chiloane says according to the information at their disposal, the killer gained entry to the house through a window.
He says it is estimated that the learner was raped and strangled in her bed in the early hours of the morning while her parents were asleep in another room.
MEC Chiloane says the parents only realized their child was dead when they tried to awaken her.
He says police are still investigating the matter and there are no suspects at this point.
The victim's name has not yet been released.
