The Gauteng provincial government said it was appalled at the abuse of babies by minders at a Johannesburg day care centre which was captured on video dubbed “nanny from hell” by the media.
The Gauteng government said on Saturday that it had stepped in to ensure justice for the babies.
In the video, which did the rounds on social media this week, a childminder or minders were seen assaulting young babies. One child was reportedly chocked close to unconsciousness.
Gauteng Social Development MEC, Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, said she immediately assigned social workers to investigate the matter.
She said her Department would ensure that those responsible were brought to book and that the families were assisted to pursue both criminal and civil proceedings.
"We are happy that the matter was already reported to the police. On our part, we have assigned a team of social workers to the case. We will continue with investigations and will act once all the information is verified. This will include an onsite visit to the centre," MEC, Mayathula-Khoza said.
The MEC said that the Gauteng government was also extremely worried about incidents where children were placed in harms-way, referring to the recent discovery of the decomposed bodies of two children in Soweto who were bound, gagged and blindfolded and buried in a makeshift grave.
