Fuel tussle continues as oil battles Rand

The Automobile Association (AA) says the strength of the rand is keeping rampant international oil prices mostly at bay.

However, only petrol is currently set for price reductions next month with other fuel types poised to increase.

The Association is forecasting a six cents a litre decrease for petrol, a 20 cents a litre increase for diesel and a 14 cents a litre increase for illuminating paraffin.

Commenting on unaudited mid-month fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund, the AA said they’ve seen some quite sharp increases in the landed prices of fuel this month, especially for diesel.

It said this had come somewhat unexpectedly after the long decline in the basic fuel price throughout May.

The AA added that much of the oil price increase has been offset by the Rand, which had performed strongly against the US dollar throughout the first half of June.

It cautioned that the current forecast could change by month-end, as the Rand looks to be flattening out while international oil prices are on an upward climb.
