FS student shooting toll rises

File

Free State police said that a third student had died after four gunmen fired on them in Botjhabela Village in Qwaqwa.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said one of two students who had been hospitalised at Mofumahadi Manapo Regional Hospital after sustaining critical gunshots wounds, died on Thursday.

He said the day before a student from the University of the Free State and one from a Maluti TVET College were killed when they were shot by alleged robbers who demanded cash, laptops, and cell phones.

This brings the number of UFS students who died as a result of the shooting to two, whilst another student is fighting for his life in hospital.

Makhele says the names of the deceased and injured cannot be released before the next-of-kin have been traced and informed.

He said it was further alleged that the students were having a party and drinking when three suspects, who were wearing balaclavas, came to them demanding cash, laptops, and cell phones.

"The exact number of stolen items is not yet determined at this stage," he adds.

Police are appealing to anyone with information on the shootings to contact Phuthaditjhaba Detectives.
