Free State police are searching for four suspects who overpowered security officers at the Winburg Traffic Department before stealing an undisclosed amount of cash from a safe.
Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says the gang struck on Thursday night, holding the three guards at gunpoint.
He says they tied them up with cable ties and taped their mouths shut before using an angle grinder to open the safe.
Thakeng said after they had fled with the money, one security officer was able to untie himself and free the others before raising the alarm.
A case of business robbery is under investigation.
