A Free State man has been arrested in Bloemfontein for being in possession of valuable antiques.

Police received information on Friday of a suspect who was allegedly in possession of Kruger Rands and arrested the 36-year-old in a taxi near the municipal swimming pool.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele says upon searching his bag and pockets, members found antique watches dating back to the 1800's, binoculars used by soldiers in the Anglo Boer War, as well as antique knives, medals and coins.

He says the value of the confiscated goods is estimated at R600 000.

Makhele says the suspect could not give a clear explanation of where he found the items.

He will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court soon for possession of suspected stolen goods.
