Six members of the Free State anti-gang unit appeared in court in Odendaalsrus on Friday on a string of string of charges that include kidnapping, assault and extortion.
The National Prosecuting Authority says the six Constables were also charged with defeating the ends of justice.
The accused officers, all Constables, are Thabang Thesele, Sipho Marumo, Setlhabi Matsime, April Monatisa, Paseka Mokoro and Thabiso Lethetsa.
The NPA says the charges relate to an incident in October last year when they arrested a Nigerian national after discovering drugs at his residence in Odendaalsrus.
NPA spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane said instead of proper procedures, they allegedly kidnapped and assaulted the victim in a police vehicle and demanded R12 000.00 in exchange for not detaining or charging him.
The case against the officers was postponed to Monday and they remain in custody.
