A 28-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison in the Verulam Regional Court this week for repeatedly raping a four-year-old boy over nine years ago.
A spokesperson for the Nasional Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KZN Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says in 2013 the victim's mother became ill and had to stay in the hospital, leaving her son in the care of the nanny.
She says the rapist would fetch the child under the pretence of playing video games but would then rape him instead.
Ramkisson-Kara says when the child eventually told his nanny she approached the man who denied it.
The victim and his mother eventually moved to Johannesburg when she caught her now 10-year-old son watching pornography.
Ramkisson-Kara says when the mother asked him where he had learnt about this kind of material he told her about his rape ordeal.
A case was opened at police and soon after the suspect handed himself over, still denying any wrongdoing.
The NPA says since nearly a decade had passed there was no medical evidence but the testimony from the child, his mother and the nanny helped to secure a conviction of life.
The man's name will also be added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
