The National Union of Mineworkers has confirmed that four mineworkers are still trapped underground at Tau Lekoa mine in Matlosana near Klerksdorp in North West, following a seismic event.
NUM says one of them, who was seriously injured, was rescued on Friday afternoon.
The union says rescue workers were able to communicate with the four mineworkers who are still trapped underground, but later they were no longer responding.
NUM says it is estimated that it will take three or four days to rescue those trapped because of the massive rocks that continue to fall underground.
It says drastic action is needed to compel the mining industry to comply with safety standards and procedures.
