Two men with Nigerian passports and two South African women are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly defrauding people through an online dating scam.
Hawks spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the four opened bank accounts in SA through which they used to received cash from online dating victims.
“One suspect was arrested shortly after receiving a dummy parcel from the Hawks at Postnet Somerset West Mall. The Hawks seized five laptops, two of them with profiles of people fraudulently used to scam people online, as well as 12 cellphones,†said Netshiunda.
The arrest of the four, aged between 27 and 38 years, brings the number of suspects arrested for online dating scams to 11.
