Four soldiers jailed for sex crimes in DRC

At least four South African soldiers are languishing in jail at home for sexual offences committed while in Democratic Republic of Congo.

Defence Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, revealed details of action taken against errant soldiers serving in the DRC and Sudan on Wednesday.

In reply to a parliamentary question, she said no member of the South African contingent within the UNAMID in Sudan are being investigated or charged for misconduct.

However, she said there are 93 cases involving members of the SANDF serving under the MONUSCO mission in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ministry spokesperson, Sonwabo Mbananga, says the Minister wants to send a clear message.

"These organisation and this government shall not in any way be complicit in number one hiding the identity of those that have been found guilty whilst undertaking duties on behalf of the SANDF" he said.
