Management at Lonmin's platinum mine in Rustenburg have yet to receive a strike notice from the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).
The Union announced earlier that it would serve the mine with a 48 hour notice on Wednesday that its members will embark on a protected strike at the weekend.
The union is demanding that the company declare it a majority union at the mine, claiming that it represents 70% of Lonmin employees.
Company spokesperson, Sue Vey says Lonmin is hopeful that a strike can be avoided.
"We are still confident that an agreement can be reached through negotiations. We have been negotiating for the past 48 hours" Vey said.
