Four people have been shot and killed, and several others have been wounded in what's believed to be a clash between community patrollers and a group of people in Soshanguve in Gauteng.
Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili says detectives and forensic experts were at Saturday's scene and interviewed witnesses.
She says they reported that at least 8 victims were taken to hospital in private vehicles.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that at about 3 am, a group of community-based patrols were converging to continue with their patrols when they noticed five people on the street. When the group approached the five, an altercation broke out", Muridili said.
Police say it is not yet clear what led to the incident.
