Four Gauteng police officers arrested for corruption, robbery and kidnapping

File

The Hawks in Gauteng have arrested four police officers implicated in serious offenses, including corruption, robbery and kidnapping.

Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela says this follows an incident in May 2018, when a civilian was reportedly approached by a marked police vehicle while walking along the R28.

After being searched and found with nothing illegal, he was nevertheless arrested and taken to the Krugersdorp police station's holding cells without being charged.

Mavimbela says the officers allegedly demanded R6 000 for his release, and the victim handed over R2 000 which he had in his possession.

The officers then drove him to Kagiso Mall to obtain the remaining R4 000.

A case was registered in May 2018 and assigned to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team.

Following a thorough investigation, the police officials involved were identified.

The case was referred to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), who determined that the officers should be prosecuted.

The suspects, aged between 37 and 44, were arrested on Tuesday, and they appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Friday for a formal bail application.
