The SA Human Rights Commission said that they would investigate whether negligence was a factor in the deaths of four babies at the George Masebe hospital in Limpopo.
Commission spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the babies died of treatable diseases amid a serious staff shortage between the 3rd and 5th of January.
He said that the deaths could have been avoided.
Manenga said they believe the shortage of doctors is not something that the Limpopo health department only became aware of after the deaths of the babies, and as such, pre-emptive measures should have been taken.
He said that incidents such as these are a violation of the country's Constitution.
