Boys-only schools have been urged to put policies and procedures in place to ensure that sexual abuse does not happen at their institutions.
The appeal on Thursday came from Rees Mann of the group South African Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse in reaction to the effective 23-year jail sentence imposed on former Parktown Boys High water polo coach, Collan Rex.
High Court judge Peet Johnson jailed him for 20 years on 144 sexual assault charges and an additional three years for 12 common assault charges.
He said it was unfortunat that irresponsible sexual bullies find their way into the schooling system.
"Institutional culture and its code of silence creates the environment and enables predators to prey on children," said Mann.
He has now made an urgent appeal to boys-only schools to urgently put policies and procedures in place to protect the boys.
Mann said Rex's victims were the real heroes of the story saying that they had in fact "stopped a possible career paedophile".
Women and Men Against Child Abuse welcomed the sentence imposed on Rex, saying that Judge Johnson had sent a strong message about the long-term ramifications and seriousness of sexual abuse.
Spokesperson, Miranda Jordan, said Rex was "aware" of what he was doing. "With this sentence, there's also a very strong message about those people who enable these kinds of crimes to happen and here we are talking about institutional sexual abuse".
