A former police Warrant Officer faces possible jail time after being convicted on a charge of corruption.
The Hawks said that 53-year-old Tlabo Maputla was convicted in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday.
Spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke, said Maputla, who was stationed at SAPS-Westernburg as a detective, was arrested by the Hawks for extorting money from a person who was arrested for dealing in drugs.
Maputla promised to "make his docket disappear."
Malulek said the person had paid Maputla R6000, but he “kept on pestering” the person for more money until the Hawks became involved.
He said Maputla was arrested in a sting operation at Polokwane City Mall after receiving a further R5 900 from the victim.
He is out on bail of R5000 and his case was postponed to 12 November for sentencing.
