Western Cape police have arrested a Nigerian national for an online romance scam in which a Canadian woman was fleeced out of a reported R24 million.
Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said the 42-year-old man was arrested in Table View in Cape Town this week.
He said the complainant reported the scam in 2022 after she met an unknown person on social media known as ‘Raymond Butler’ and began an online relationship.
Swartbooi said this had developed to the extent that the “suspect convinced the complainant to invest R24 million in a project abroad.”
He said the alleged scammer was arrested in Charing Crescent, Parklands in Table View.
“The suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates' court once charged for fraud,” he said.
