Five people have lost their lives in a powerful storm that battered communities, north of Durban.

Areas in and around Sandfields in Tongaat experienced severe weather that ripped off roofs and flooded streets.

Heavy rain, hail and winds wreaked havoc in the afternoon, injuring several people.

KZN disaster officials say most of the incident reports came through from Tongaat.

Other areas in the province were affected including Umgababa, Durban Central, and the western region.

Strong winds also lashed communities in Newcastle, Dannhauser and Nquthu.

According to members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) who responded to several incidents on Monday, a 16-month-old baby was killed and her twin sister injured after a wall collapsed at their home in Tongaat.

Another 39-year-old woman was killed when a wall collapsed on her on Rama Drive in Tongaat.

RUSA says they were called to the scene and discovered the female's body when they cleared the debris.

Kevin Rae, a forecaster at the South African Weather Services in KZN confirmed that at least two tornados touched down in KZN, affecting Tongaat, Newcastle, Ballito and Utrecht.
