Firearm amnesty extension welcomed

File

The organisation Afriforum said it welcomed the extension of the firearm amnesty, appealing to gun owners to use this time to apply for new licenses if their old firearm licenses had expired during the lockdown.

The new amnesty period, approved by the National Assembly this week, runs from 1 August 2020 to 31 January 2021.

“Firearm owners in possession of an expired “white” licence card should seriously consider making use of the amnesty period to be in legal possession of their firearms again,” said Afriforum’s Marnus Kamfer.

He said during this period, they have the opportunity to hand in those weapons whose licenses had expired and start the process of applying for a weapon’s licence from scratch.

Kamfer said the organisation understood peoples’ reluctance to do this, but he said they were encouraging them to seek expert help and to see the process through to the end.

He said they could then defend themselves and their families “within the framework of the law.”
