The festive season road death toll since the 1st of December, has surpassed the 1,000 mark.
Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said in a statement this afternoon that 1,143 people had died on the country's roads so far this months.
One-hundred-and-sixty-one of these fatalities were in the Eastern Cape.
Peters says the figures tell a very unpleasant and discouraging story about the conduct in the usage of the country's roads.
She says 80% of fatalities have been from crashes in residential and built-up areas - which she has described as "concerning".
