Festive season death toll continues to climb

The Road Traffic Management Corporation says an alarming number of motorists and passengers still don't use seat belts on the country's roads, adding to the traffic death toll.
The corporation says some 700 people have already died so far this December in road accidents.
Spokesman Ashref Ismail says alcohol abuse and the disregard of the rules of the road are the major contributors to road accidents.

"Our fatalities from the 1st of December until the 18th as reported by the SAPS stands at 676 people who have lost their lives from 564 fatal crashes. It is an extremely worrying situation particularly if you consider that 7 out of the 11 major fatal crashes are as a result of head on collisions" Ismail said.
