The crew of an air force helicopter has located the wreckage of a military plane that went missing on Wednesday.
The aircraft was on its way from Waterkloof air force base in Pretoria to Mthatha.
Air show commentator and aviation expert Brian Emmenis described the crash as a major aviation tragedy.
"The Oryx helicopter was able to locate the wreckage and I believe that the news is out that there were no survivors. It is a major aviation tragedy in South Africa, this aircraft had a very rich and proud heritage in the airforce. It served in WW2 and was recently given a new lease of life when it was painted up as the official support aircraft of the Silver Falcons" Emmenis said.
As far as can be ascertained, the C47-TP aircraft was carrying 11 people -- believed to be four crew members and a medical team.
Former president Nelson Mandela's military medical team often travel from Waterkloof to Mthatha in military aircraft.
